Mr. McCain wanted to choose someone else, but both Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman and former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge favour abortion. For that heresy, neither could be selected. The social conservatives, politically active church organizations and evangelicals would have rebelled. Groups already skeptical of Mr. McCain as insufficiently committed to social conservative causes would have had their worst fears confirmed. Many Republicans would have sat out the election.
Mr. Lieberman and Mr. Ridge would have appealed to moderate, independent voters. They had far more experience than Ms. Palin, governor of Alaska for less than two years. They were proven campaigners. But they would have split the Republican Party.
